Cuisinart Coffee Center Grind & Brew Plus (SS-GB1 / SS-GB1NAS) review

An earlier dual-side brewer with a 12-cup glass carafe, integrated blade grinder and a separate pod brewer; the SS-GB1 and Black Stainless SS-GB1NAS share the documented brewing configuration.

A useful fit for

For a household that regularly wants both a 12-cup glass carafe and a separate pod cup, with whole-bean convenience on the carafe side; the SS-GB1 and Black Stainless SS-GB1NAS are documented as the same operating configuration, but both sides, reservoirs and grinder add cleanup.

The main tradeoff

The SS-GB1 family is an earlier, now-discontinued design in the current Cuisinart listing. The blade grinder has no documented user grind-size control; the 12-cup pot sits on a warming plate; the reusable HomeBarista cup is compatible but not included; and each brew side has separate reservoir/filter care.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the SS-GB1 / SS-GB1 / SS-GB1NAS grind whole beans for a glass carafe while also offering a regular 12-ounce pod serving?

Yes. The carafe side has a blade grinder with Grind Off for pre-ground coffee; the physically separate single-serve side offers 8, 10 and 12 ounces. Their carafe and pod reservoirs are separate.

Does its included-parts list confirm a reusable HomeBarista cup for ground coffee on the pod side?

No. Cuisinart says the HomeBarista reusable filter cup is compatible but not included with the exact SS-GB1 / SS-GB1 / SS-GB1NAS package.

Can I turn off the integrated grinder and use pre-ground coffee for a carafe batch?

Yes. The SS-GB1 Series controls include Grind Off, and the manual directs owners to use it when brewing pre-ground coffee. This bypass applies to the carafe side; it does not add a single-serve grounds cup to the included package.

The Cuisinart Coffee Center Grind & Brew Plus joins a 12-cup glass-carafe brewer, a blade grinder and a separate single-serve pod brewer in one countertop unit. The documented functional family appears under both the unsuffixed SS-GB1 code and SS-GB1NAS; the latter is the Black Stainless version named on Cuisinart's current product page. Its two sides use different reservoirs: the manufacturer lists 64 ounces for the carafe side and 40 ounces for the pod side. That split is useful if one person wants a fresh pot while another makes one cup, but it is also a wider, more involved machine than a basic drip brewer. The SS-GB1NAS product page is marked discontinued and out of stock; the linked SS-GB1 Series instruction booklet explains the two brewing routines and their separate cleaning work.

Cuisinart's model-specific SS-GB1 sell sheet lists the same carafe and pod functions, sizes and separate reservoir capacities. The unsuffixed Cuisinart route now redirects to the SS-GB1NAS page, and Cuisinart's part listings name both codes as compatible with the same Coffee Center carafe, capsule holder and carafe filter. The sell-sheet picture below shows the silver-faced SS-GB1 version; the SS-GB1NAS page identifies its version as Black Stainless. Treat these as finish/model-code variants of one documented operating configuration, while checking the exact code and condition on a particular used offer.

A pot, a grinder and a pod route—not a single all-purpose brew chamber

For a shared batch, the left-side carafe brewer can grind whole beans immediately before brewing, then collect the coffee in its glass pot above a warming plate. The blade grinder has no user-adjustable grind-size menu documented in the manual, so this is a convenience feature rather than a replacement for a separate grinder that lets you tune grind distribution. The machine offers a Bold choice and a 24-hour start timer, and the carafe side can be set to turn off from zero to four hours after brewing. Those controls suit a household that wants an overnight schedule and a selectable stronger setting; they do not promise a measured brewing temperature or a particular taste result.

The right-side single-serve brewer has its own 40-ounce reservoir and takes compatible single-cup pods, with 8-, 10- and 12-ounce button choices. The exact product page names Keurig K-Cup pods and Cuisinart HomeBarista, but the reusable HomeBarista filter cup is explicitly not included. A removable drip-tray plate gives taller travel mugs more clearance, while a flip-down shelf supports shorter cups. If a reusable grounds cup must come in the box, do not let the machine's grounds grinder or permanent carafe filter stand in for that separate requirement: the package page does not say the single-serve cup is included.

Whole beans are convenient, but cleaning becomes part of the brew

Before brewing beans, measure them into the removable grinder basket and close its lid; the manual says the lid must be in place for operation and warns against overfilling. The permanent Gold-Tone carafe filter avoids paper, while the manual also permits a standard cone-shaped paper filter. Using the permanent filter may let some fine grounds reach the pot, and the booklet cautions against stacking paper and permanent filters or using grounds that are too fine because the basket can clog or back up. If you prefer pre-ground coffee, select Grind Off before a carafe batch. That gives the brewer a useful bypass rather than forcing every pot through the grinder.

The trade is maintenance. The grinder basket and lid, brew basket parts, carafe side and pod-side components each need attention; Cuisinart directs owners to clean and dry grinder parts after every use. The manual allows the removable grinder and filter pieces to be washed in warm, soapy water or in the upper dishwasher rack, but it warns not to pour water into the grinder cavity because that can damage the motor. Charcoal filters are prepared and replaced separately in both water systems, and the single-serve path has its own cleaning and descaling instructions. It is sensible to keep the two reservoirs and their filter holders distinct when filling and maintaining the machine.

Who should choose it—and when a simpler brewer is better

This combination suits a counter where both a full pot and a pod-sized drink are regularly useful, and where whole-bean convenience matters enough to accept the extra grinder cleanup. It matches a request for glass plus a warming plate, a regular 12-ounce pod option, and an integrated whole-bean grinder. It does not meet a must-have four-ounce pod setting, a thermal carafe, an independent hot-water dispenser, a steam wand, a milk frother or an included HomeBarista reusable cup. If you want the integrated grinder but do not need pods, the 12-cup Cuisinart DGB-400NAS is a simpler glass-carafe comparison. If pods matter but grinding does not, the SS-16 Coffee Center offers a different carafe-and-pod arrangement; for a thermal pot and specialty capsule/wand functions, compare the SS-4N1T Barista Bar.

Cuisinart lists the SS-GB1NAS at 10.748 inches long, 11.732 inches wide and 15.925 inches high; the SS-GB1 sell sheet rounds those dimensions to 10.75 by 11.73 by 15.93 inches. Measure the full counter footprint and overhead opening, and leave room to open the top covers and access the separate reservoirs. The manufacturer marks the SS-GB1NAS discontinued and out of stock. For either code, verify the model label, carafe, grinder parts, pod holder and any included filters in the specific offer; a product image shows a version's design, not a seller's box. Use an Cuisinart SS-GB1 / SS-GB1NAS search rather than assuming a similar dual brewer has the same finish and package.
