A removable-reservoir single-cup brewer for K-Cup-style pods or loose grounds, with separate size menus, a Bold control, and no carafe. Grounds can be brewed at 8, 10, 12, or 14 ounces; pods at 8 or 10 ounces.

A useful fit for

A practical fit for a one-person or staggered household routine that alternates between compatible pods and fresh grounds, wants a removable tank rather than a fresh-water pour for every cup, and values a Bold option. Its 14-ounce maximum belongs to the grounds route; pods top out at 10 ounces.

The main tradeoff

The 49901 makes one cup at a time, not a pot; it has no documented iced program, four-ounce pod serving, temperature adjustment, frother, or independent hot-water outlet. Grounds can reach 14 ounces, but the pod menu stops at 10. Its included reusable filter is a single-cup basket, not a permanent carafe filter or Ninja HomeBarista cup.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I switch between pods and my own ground coffee without buying a separate grounds basket?

Yes. Hamilton Beach lists both the pod holder and reusable grounds basket with the 49901/49901G. The two are alternate single-cup setups; the grounds route offers 8, 10, 12, or 14 ounces while pods offer 8 or 10 ounces.

Does the 49901/49901G have a stronger-brew choice, and can I use it to make a dedicated iced cycle?

The manual documents a Bold button as well as Regular brewing. It does not document an iced/Over Ice mode; if a dedicated pod iced setting is essential, compare the separate FlexBrew 49921 instead.

Will a regular 12-ounce pod work, or is 12 ounces only on the grounds side?

The 12-ounce button belongs to the grounds menu. The manufacturer lists only 8 and 10 ounces for a pod, so a 12-ounce pod requirement is not met by this model.

The Hamilton Beach FlexBrew 49901 is a single-cup brewer with two separate ways to load coffee: a compatible single-serve pod holder or a reusable grounds basket. The useful detail is that those paths do not share the same cup menu. Pods are listed for 8 or 10 ounces, while grounds can be brewed at 8, 10, 12, or 14 ounces. It also has a Bold button and a removable 50-ounce water reservoir. That combination makes it a practical fit for a household that changes coffee formats, but it is not a small carafe brewer or a machine that makes a programmed iced drink.

Choose the input before choosing a cup size

For a pod, install the removable pod holder and choose 8 or 10 ounces. For loose coffee, use the separate basket and choose among 8, 10, 12, or 14 ounces. The bigger 12- and 14-ounce selections belong to the grounds route only. If your regular pod serving needs to be twelve ounces, this model does not document that. Likewise, the four-ounce option common on some other pod makers is not part of the 49901 menu.

The included grounds basket gives you a way to use coffee from a bag without buying a separate single-cup accessory. The manual allows up to three tablespoons (15 grams) in that basket and suggests a No. 1 paper cone filter if you want to reduce sediment; it does not say a paper filter is supplied. Hamilton Beach says the brewer can prepare an eight-ounce cup in about 90 seconds. Treat that as the manufacturer's estimate, not a measured promise for every water temperature or coffee choice.

A Bold control is a real functional distinction from the sibling FlexBrew 49921. The 49901 manual lists both Bold and Regular, whereas the 49921's exact feature list presents an iced button instead. If a strength toggle is part of your daily routine and ice is not, the 49901 is the more suitable member of this narrow comparison. A button changes the brewer's programmed routine; it is not a guarantee that every roast or grind will taste stronger to every person.

A reservoir that avoids refilling cup by cup

The removable tank holds 50 ounces, and Hamilton Beach describes it as enough for up to six servings before refilling. That saves the repeated fill-and-pour step found on compact single-cup brewers with a small reservoir. It is still a water tank, not stored brewed coffee: each request makes one cup fresh, so this is not a substitute for a carafe when several people want coffee at once. The official dimensions are 13.7 inches high, 6.6 inches wide, and 13 inches deep. Its narrow width is a meaningful counter-space advantage, but allow clearance to lift the brewing lid and pull the reservoir for filling.

The included cup rest can be removed for a travel mug up to 7.5 inches tall. Measure the mug with its lid and the clearance under your cabinets rather than assuming every tall commuter cup will fit. The staged mug in the product image is illustrative; it is not an included item. The specification page does not establish a carafe, warming plate, cup heater, timer, temperature control, or independent hot-water outlet. If you want a shared batch or a separate cup of plain hot water, compare machines that specifically document those jobs.

What daily care actually asks of you

This is not a sealed pod-only appliance. After using pods, rinse the pod holder; after using grounds, rinse the brew basket. Hamilton Beach's guide says removable parts may be hand washed or washed on the dishwasher's top rack, but warns against the sanitize cycle. It also gives a needle-cleaning procedure and recommends cleaning the brewer at least monthly, or weekly where water is hard. Descaling is a hands-on vinegar cycle followed by two or three water-only cycles. A hot-chocolate or sweetened pod should be followed by a water-only brew to reduce the chance of a clogged needle.

That maintenance is manageable, but it matters if the brewer will be shared by people who change pod and grounds inserts without rinsing them. Use ordinary drip-grind coffee rather than an extremely fine grind; the manual warns that fine grounds can continue dripping and contribute to overflow or sediment. Keep the basket below its fill line, close the lid fully, and use the correct cup for the chosen serving size.

Who should choose the 49901?

Choose it when you want pods and ground coffee in the same single-cup machine, want a reusable grounds basket included, prefer a removable water tank, and value Bold/Regular control more than an iced program. It is also a sensible choice when a 14-ounce grounds serving matters but a 12-ounce pod is not essential. Choose the 49921 if a dedicated iced button takes priority; that model's manual requires a heatproof tumbler and ice and describes a different hot-over-ice routine. Choose a Trio or carafe machine if you need to serve more than one cup from a single brew, and a pod brewer with a documented 12-ounce pod setting if that specific size is non-negotiable.

How the 49901G relates

Hamilton Beach also lists an exact U.S. product page for model 49901G. That page gives the same pod and grounds size menus, removable 50-ounce tank, Bold/Regular controls, dimensions, cup-rest clearance and included brewing inserts described above, and it links to the same Use & Care guide. The guide’s model table identifies the 49901 as type A146 and says suffix letters may follow listed model numbers. On this evidence, 49901G belongs with the 49901 function review rather than needing a second capability profile; no separate brewing mode or size difference is published. The manufacturer links the same image asset for both codes, and the mug pictured is staged.
