A useful fit for

A fit for a household that will use a pod or grounds for an individual cup and also brew a separate glass pot, and whose 40-ounce removable single-serve tank and 8/10-ounce pod choices suit its day. It adds a carafe-only delay program, Bold/Regular choice and 14-ounce single-serve grounds option.

The main tradeoff

Compared with the A147 49916G, this exact A149 configuration has a 40-ounce rather than 56-ounce single-serve tank and its manual lists fewer pod/grounds sizes. Both share the separate glass 12-cup carafe and one-side-at-a-time limit. There is no documented Over Ice, Cold Brew, independent hot-water route or carafe permanent filter; a 12-ounce pod requirement is not met.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you want one machine that alternates between a pod, grounds mug and glass batch pot?

The exact 49904FG guide documents a pod holder, a separate lidded grounds basket and a 12-cup glass carafe with warming plate. It can brew only one side at a time, so this is a choice among routines, not simultaneous brewing.

Which single-cup size suits you: up to 14 ounces from grounds, or a required 12-ounce pod?

The A149 guide lists 8/10/14 ounces for grounds and only 8 or 10 ounces for pods. Its 40-ounce tank is removable; no 12-ounce pod serving is documented.

Is a basic Regular/Bold selection enough, or must the carafe warming temperature be adjustable?

The guide lists Regular and Bold brew strengths and a warming plate that switches off two hours after brewing begins. It documents no selectable carafe warming-temperature range, so choose a brewer with a documented temperature adjustment if that is essential.

The Hamilton Beach FlexBrew Trio 49904FG is a three-route coffee maker: a compatible pod, single-cup grounds, or a separate grounds carafe. Its most important difference from the better-known 56-ounce Trio family is not the finish but the smaller 40-ounce removable single-serve reservoir and a different size menu. Pick it if you will genuinely use both the mug and pot sides, but compare those limits before treating every FlexBrew Trio as interchangeable.

Three inputs, two separate brew routines

The 49904FG has a dedicated single-serve side and a separate carafe side. The single-serve holder accepts compatible pods; a removable lidded basket accepts ground coffee. The carafe side uses its own basket and brews up to 12 manufacturer-sized cups into the glass pot on a warming plate. These are alternate routines, not simultaneous brews: the Use & Care guide says the unit operates on only one side at a time.

That separation helps when people in one household prefer different coffee formats. One person can load grounds for a cup while another uses a pod on another day; a larger pot is available when several cups are wanted. But if everyone expects coffee at once, this still means one brew cycle after another. It is also physically a two-sided appliance, so its 13.8-inch height, 11.3-inch width and 13.2-inch depth should be checked against the actual counter and cabinet space.

The single-cup sizes are specific to the input

For pods, the directly linked manual lists 8- and 10-ounce choices. With grounds, its menu is 8, 10 or 14 ounces, and the basket must stay below its MAX line; the guide sets 3 tablespoons (15 grams) as the grounds limit. That last route is the way to reach the listed 14-ounce travel-mug serving. The product page describes clearance for a 7-inch travel mug, with the cup rest removed. Do not read “three ways” as three versions of one universal cup-size button: the holder, size options and amount of grounds change with the selected input.

A removable 40-ounce reservoir serves the single-serve side. It can mean fewer refills than a small cup-at-a-time brewer, but the maker’s 56-ounce 49916G sibling holds 16 ounces more. If several people cycle through cups or you want to top up the tank less often, that difference is worth checking. The 49904FG is not confirmed for a 12-ounce pod setting, and its manual does not list a 6-ounce single-serve option. A 12-ounce pod requirement should send you to a model with that size explicitly documented rather than asking this menu to stretch.

The pot side is conventional, with useful timing controls

For the carafe, Hamilton Beach rates the glass pot to 12 cups. The guide calls for a basket-style paper filter and up to 60 grams of grounds for a full pot. Regular and Bold strength choices are documented; the manual notes that Bold takes longer. A separate Easy-Touch delay program can schedule the carafe side, and Auto Pause & Pour briefly lets you lift the pot to pour during brewing. Return it within 20 seconds, as instructed, to avoid overflow. After a brew cycle begins, the unit shuts itself off after two hours.

The scheduling feature is for the carafe side, not the individual-cup side. The manual says the single-serve side cannot be used while the carafe is programmed. That is a real routine tradeoff: the 49904FG can stage a morning pot, but it is not a “schedule any cup” machine. There is no documented Over Ice or grounds Cold Brew program, and a separate hot-water dispenser is not listed. Choose a dedicated hot-over-ice model if an iced setting is a non-negotiable part of the routine.

Care takes attention on both sides

Rinse the pod holder, grounds basket and carafe after use; the manual asks that removable pieces be washed by hand or on the dishwasher’s top rack and warns against the SANI setting. It gives separate vinegar-and-water cleaning procedures for the pot and single-serve circuits, recommending at least monthly cleaning and more frequent attention in hard-water areas. The single-serve piercing needle can clog and is sharp, so follow the unplug-and-cool instructions before removing or clearing its holder. Grounds near the MAX line, especially finely ground coffee, can overflow; the guide suggests an optional No. 1 cone paper filter when sediment is a problem, not as an included accessory.

Which Trio should you compare?

The 49904FG is the 40-ounce A149 configuration. The black-stainless 49916G belongs to the separately documented A147 family, whose 56-ounce single-serve reservoir and five grounds sizes (6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 ounces) give more room for refills and cup choice; its black-stainless control panel and slightly different size menu are visible in the exact model image and guide. The A147 family’s pod choices are 6, 8 and 10 ounces. Both designs pair the single-cup side with a 12-cup glass pot and warmer, but do not collapse their model-specific manuals into one spec sheet. The recertified R49916 page describes the 49916 function set and a 90-day warranty; it is a separate condition/offer, not a new brewing mode, and was shown out of stock when checked.

Choose the 49904FG when its 40-ounce reservoir and 8/10-ounce pod menu fit your use, while the glass pot earns its footprint. Consider the 49916G/A147 configuration for its 56-ounce tank and broader cup-size range. If single-cup brewing matters more than a batch pot, a narrower single-serve brewer avoids the second side and its separate cleaning. For a household that truly uses both forms, this model combines them sensibly—but the exact 49904FG manual, rather than the “Trio” name alone, is the guide to its capacities and limitations.
