A useful fit for

A fit for a household that wants one fresh cup from its own grounds, appreciates a reusable mesh measure/filter instead of pods or paper, and prefers filling to an 8- or 14-ounce mark and pressing one button. The black 47620 and white 47621 share this simple hot single-cup routine.

The main tradeoff

This compact format tops out at 14 ounces and handles one cup per cycle. Its water fill is not a batch pot, and its pages list no pod option, carafe, Bold/Regular control, programmable start or iced/cold-brew mode. The manual allows up to 15 g of grounds for a 14-ounce cup, so it is not a route to a much stronger oversized mug. Water-reservoir removability and electrical specifications for the 47621 are not established here.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Will you brew your own grounds in the included reusable Scoop instead of using pods?

The 47620/47621 pages describe ground coffee in the reusable mesh Scoop and explicitly say the brewer does not use K-Cup pods or paper filters. The Scoop is a single-cup filter, not a reusable carafe filter; this brewer has no carafe.

Is up to 14 ounces in a travel mug enough for one brew?

The manual's water reservoir marks are 8 ounces minimum and 14 ounces maximum. The product page says the adjustable stand accommodates a travel mug up to seven inches high, not that the machine makes a 16-ounce serving. The mug is separate.

Do you want one easy Brew button, or is a selectable Bold setting essential?

The exact pages describe one large Brew button and automatic shutoff; they do not document a Bold/Regular control. If you need a strength setting, compare The Scoop 49987 or a compatible FlexBrew rather than assuming the similar Scoop name means the controls match.

The Hamilton Beach The Scoop Single-Serve Coffee Maker (models 47620 in black and 47621 in white) is a deliberately simple grounds brewer: fill the water reservoir to the 8- or 14-ounce line, load ground coffee into its reusable mesh Scoop, close the lid and press one illuminated Brew button. It is a sensible direction if you want a fresh cup from your own coffee without a pod holder or disposable paper filter. It is not the right choice if “single serve” means K-Cup compatibility, a programmable timer, a strength menu or a small carafe.

Two water amounts, one cup at a time

The 47620 and 47621 are finish variants of the same basic arrangement. Their manufacturer pages list the same cup-size routine, dimensions and brew controls; the exact 47621 page links the same Use & Care guide whose cover names the 47620 family. The guide describes filling the internal reservoir to MIN for 8 ounces or MAX for 14 ounces, then brewing that serving into a cup or a travel mug up to seven inches tall. The mug is not included. The upper limit is 14 ounces, so a large-looking travel mug does not turn this into a 16-ounce brewer.

That water-fill approach keeps the controls straightforward, but it also makes each serving a separate setup. There is no 40-ounce removable tank here. If more than one person wants coffee, refill and run another cycle rather than treating the listed 14 ounces as batch capacity. The manual asks you to allow two minutes between brews. Compare that with The Scoop 49987: it keeps the same grounds-first idea and 8/14-ounce sizes, but adds a removable 40-ounce reservoir and Bold/Regular choice. If refilling between cups or adjusting strength matters, the shared product name can hide a meaningful difference.

The reusable Scoop saves a step, not all cleanup

Here, “The Scoop” is both the measuring basket and the reusable mesh filter. Add ground coffee to it, keep the grounds below the MAX mark, then set it into the grounds catcher before closing the lid. Hamilton Beach says no K-Cup pod or paper filter is needed. The guide recommends 1½ tablespoons (8 grams) for an 8-ounce cup and allows up to 3 tablespoons (15 grams) for 14 ounces. Those amounts are starting points, not a promise of a particular strength. For a richer big mug, you cannot keep adding grounds past that stated maximum; buyers who want more adjustment may prefer a model with a documented Bold control or a larger grounds basket.

Grind and loading technique matter. The guide recommends a medium automatic-drip grind and warns that very fine coffee can overflow. It also says not to pack grounds into the Scoop: a dense bed can slow water and produce weak coffee rather than a stronger cup. Rinse the Scoop and removable grounds catcher after use. So this trades disposable pod handling for a small reusable part that needs attention after each brew. The machine reduces the number of supplies, not the need to empty wet grounds.

Simple controls, compact footprint

The product page describes a single large Brew button with a light and automatic shutoff at the end of the cycle. There is no separate Bold or Regular selection, no temperature adjustment, no delayed-start clock and no independent hot-water outlet listed. Those omissions are helpful if you want a short routine and do not need extra modes; they are deal-breakers when a specific mode is essential. The published size is 12.6 inches high by 5 inches wide by 9.2 inches deep. Check both counter depth and clearance above the hinged top before choosing a spot, especially if cupboards sit low. The adjustable cup stand accommodates a cup or the taller travel mug, but the maker’s seven-inch height limit still applies.

Maintenance is manageable, but follow the wait times

For day-to-day care, the manual says to rinse the Scoop and catcher after every use and wait at least five minutes after brewing before emptying them. The Scoop, grounds catcher and drip-tray cover are top-rack dishwasher-safe; the guide says not to use the dishwasher’s Sanitize setting. Wipe the body rather than immersing it. For mineral cleanup, Hamilton Beach’s instructions call for a half-cup of white vinegar mixed with a half-cup of cold water: start a brew, unplug after 30 seconds, wait 30 minutes, finish the cycle and then run one clean-water cycle. The manual says to clean monthly, or weekly in hard-water areas. This is a little more involved than tossing a pod, but it is a clear routine for a brewer whose grounds parts are reused every morning.

When to choose another Hamilton Beach model

Choose the 47620/47621 if your non-negotiables are ground coffee, an included mesh single-cup filter and an uncomplicated 8- or 14-ounce hot cup. Choose the 49987 instead if you still want grounds-only coffee but value its removable 40-ounce reservoir and Bold setting; it remains a one-cup machine and still tops out at 14 ounces. Move to the FlexBrew Advanced 49925 if a household needs both pods and grounds, a larger removable tank, or a documented brewed-over-ice cup. It adds more input and cycle choices, while also asking you to handle a more involved setup. None of these single-cup models substitutes for the separate glass carafe on the larger FlexBrew 49935 when a group needs a pot.

Bottom line: The black 47620 and white 47621 make sense for someone who values a compact, single-button grounds cup and is comfortable filling water and rinsing a reusable basket for every serving. Their tradeoff is a short menu: one cup at a time, 8 or up to 14 ounces, and no documented pod, iced, carafe or strength-control route. If any of those missing capabilities is essential, compare the exact alternative before choosing by color.
