Model comparison
Hamilton Beach FrontFill 46310J vs. 46390: 12 or 14 cups?
The Hamilton Beach 46310J FrontFill 12-cup and 46390 FrontFill 14-cup are both hot, grounds-only brewers with glass carafes. Their shared front access and Regular/Bold/1–4-cup options can make the model names look like the main difference. In practice, the decision also changes the maker-rated batch size, warming-plate cutoff, and which filters the box documents.
First decide how much carafe you actually need
The 46310J is listed for a 12-cup glass carafe; the 46390 is rated for 14. Those are the manufacturers’ coffee-maker cup markings, not a promise that each “cup” equals a large travel mug. If your usual pot fits within the 46310J’s stated capacity, the larger model does not automatically improve the coffee or make an individual mug. The 1–4-cup control on either machine is a small carafe brew, not a direct-to-mug single-serve outlet.
If a genuine 14-cup maker rating is an essential household need, the documented 46390 is the fit. A 12-cup minimum can include the 46310J without assuming that it has the larger pot. Both are carafe machines, not pod-and-grounds hybrids.
FrontFill describes access, not a removable tank
Both exact product pages describe front access to the reservoir and a swing-open brew basket, a useful arrangement when reaching behind a brewer under a cabinet is awkward. That does not make the water reservoir a removable carry-to-sink tank. The normal workflow remains measure grounds into the carafe basket, add water through the front opening, and brew a pot. If you need individual pod sizes or want to remove a tank for filling, neither model is documented as that kind of machine.
The longer plate interval and filter package favor the 46390
The 46310J’s exact page and linked Use & Care guide support a two-hour warming-plate shutoff. The guide shows a paper-filter basket and permits an optional permanent coffee filter; it does not establish that a reusable filter is included in every offer. The 46390 page documents a plate cutoff adjustable from zero to four hours in ten-minute intervals. It also lists a reusable, handle-equipped cone coffee filter and a separate charcoal filter for the water reservoir. The charcoal piece filters reservoir water; it is not a substitute for the coffee filter.
So the 46390 is the clearer choice if you need at least four documented hours on the plate or want the listed reusable coffee-filter package. A longer timer is not a coffee-temperature guarantee, and the maker’s cup rating is not a measured serving size. If two hours is enough and you prefer to choose paper filters or source an optional permanent filter separately, the 46310J can cover the simpler 12-cup routine.
A practical choice
- Choose 46310J when 12 maker-cups are sufficient, front access and a small-batch carafe mode matter, and a two-hour plate cutoff meets your routine.
- Choose 46390 when the extra two maker-cups, adjustable up-to-four-hour plate cutoff, or documented reusable cone filter package is useful.
- Choose neither if pods, a personal-cup outlet, a thermal carafe, or a removable water tank is essential. Those are different operating plans, not missing accessories to assume.
These differences are grounded in Hamilton Beach’s 46310J product page and linked Use & Care guide, and the exact 46390 product page and A131 Use & Care guide. A similar-looking family code is not interchangeable evidence for either exact package.
